Swaths of California still saturated by ruthless storms will get walloped by another atmospheric river, spawning fears of renewed flooding and forcing some residents to flee.

The state has already been hammered by at least 11 atmospheric rivers this season. An atmospheric river is like a fire hose that carries saturated air from the tropics to higher latitudes, dumping relentless rain or snow.

Deluge From Atmospheric River Event Continues Into Wednesday

The storm system generated by yet another atmospheric river will dump more rain on Southern California this week beginning Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

One to 3 inches of rainfall is forecast for coastal areas and valleys, while mountain and foothill communities may see 3 to 6 inches of rain by the time the storm passes on Wednesday.

A powerful storm is expected to sweep across California this week, bringing cold temperatures, cutting winds and snowfall at remarkably low elevations nearly statewide.

“This is shaping up to be a very unusual event,” UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain said in a virtual briefing Tuesday morning. “We are going to see low [elevation] snow all the way from the Oregon border to the Mexican border — it’s just a question of how low.”

Shiver Me Timbers: High Winds Chill Out San Diegans

The second cold winter storm to arrive in the San Diego area over the past week brought more downpours, mountain snow and high winds to the region Monday. As of early Monday evening, the inclement conditions had delivered up to about three-fifths of an inch of precipitation along the coast and in the local deserts, a little more than an inch in the inland valleys, and almost 2 1/3 inches in parts of the East County highlands, according to the National Weather Service.
