Sweetwater Authority Seeks New Members for its Citizens Advisory Committee

Chula Vista, Calif. – The Sweetwater Authority Governing Board is seeking interested community members to serve on its Citizens Advisory Committee. The CAC offers citizen involvement in advising the agency on ways it can improve its operational efficiency.

Drought Prompts Water Transfer Between Loveland and Sweetwater Reservoirs

Sweetwater Authority has begun transferring water between its two reservoirs in response to drought conditions, the agency announced. The move has paused access to fishing at Loveland Reservoir and local anglers fear that continued draining will result in a permanent end to one of the few, free options to fish in the region.

Fishing Comes to a Halt at Sweetwater Authority’s Loveland Reservoir

Sweetwater Authority is again removing water from its Loveland Reservoir to meet customer needs during drought conditions, but the move will halt the lake’s free fishing program.

The agency, which serves roughly 200,000 South County customers, began moving water downstream to its Sweetwater Reservoir this week. Officials said its water supply took a hit because of the region’s lack of rainfall and that transferring the water is a cheaper option than importing.

Controlled Transfer of Water from Sweetwater Authority’s Loveland Reservoir Begins November 15

Chula Vista, Calif. – In order to secure additional water sources for our customers, Sweetwater Authority initiated a controlled transfer of water between its two reservoirs on November 15, 2022. Water that leaves Loveland Reservoir is transferred through the Sweetwater River channel and captured at Sweetwater Reservoir where it can be treated and distributed to Authority customers at a lower cost than importing water. Drought conditions and lack of rainfall in the region have created a need to transfer this water to Sweetwater Reservoir.

‘Pennies From Heaven’ Could Save Sweetwater Water Authority Customers Millions

They looked down at the water blasting through the Loveland Dam and called it “Pennies from Heaven.”

Sweetwater Water Authority engineers opened a valve at the base of the dam shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Chula Vista, Calif. – At last night’s meeting, the Sweetwater Authority Governing Board awarded the Work for Water Scholarship to two local students. David Inchaurregui Jr. of Chula Vista and Kassandra Beltran of National City were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship to support their career goals of working in the water industry.

Federal Cash Arrives for San Diegans Drowning in Water Bills as Shutoffs Resume

Thousands of San Diegans are struggling to pay their water bills as shutoffs resume across much of the state. Experts fear the burden will only get worse as the cost of water continues to soar, driven in part by ongoing historic drought.

However, federal emergency cash is now providing temporary relief for many low-income residents — up to $2,000 for unpaid water bills.

Sweetwater Authority Approves Plans for Bayfront Development Pipelines

Chula Vista, Calif. – The Sweetwater Authority approved the initial phase of improvement plans for the Chula Vista Bayfront Redevelopment. This phase of the project includes nearly a mile of public water main.

“The Governing Board is excited for the Chula Vista Bayfront Development and the opportunities that it will bring to our community,” said Chair Alejandra Sotelo-Solis. “The Board is supportive of development in the community and looks forward to providing safe, reliable water to the businesses and residents of the Bayfront.”

The Chula Vista Bayfront Redevelopment will provide the region with new spaces for hotels, residential units, and parks with a variety of amenities. The Authority is proud to provide water to the thriving South County community. We continually look for ways to better serve the community, including ways to partner with developers to build the infrastructure needed to keep South County vibrant.

State Water Resources Control Board Chair Tours Sweetwater Authority’s Desalination Facility

Chula Vista, Calif. – The Sweetwater Authority Governing Board welcomed the Chair of the State Water Resources Control Board, E. Joaquin Esquivel, at the Richard A. Reynolds Groundwater Desalination Facility today for a tour.

Hydro Station Lets Students Explore WaterSmart Landscape Design

As its fourth year begins, the Chula Vista Hydro Station offers new activities in 2022, helping Chula Vista Elementary School District students learn about using water wisely through hands-on activities.

A unique joint educational partnership between the Sweetwater Authority, the Otay Water District, and the Chula Vista Elementary School District, the Hydro Station, opened in 2019 at the Richard A. Reynolds Groundwater Desalination Facility.
